Creation / Ecology
Two hundred and forty persons from eighty-two religious institutes, fifty-seven countries and five continents gathered in Assisi from 12-16 May 2009. “Creation at the Heart of Mission” was jointly sponsored by SEDOS and the JPIC Commission of the USIG/USG where both religious and lay collaborators were led by theologians Séan McDonagh and Denis Edwards in considering ecology and our Christian life. EU neighbourhood policy - image: wikimedia
It is not surprising that he traces approvingly those elements in the new encyclical that, so he believes, Pope Benedict takes over from John Paul’s ‘Christian personalism’: ‘The clearly Benedictine passages in Caritas in Veritate follow and develop the line of John Paul II, particularly in the new encyclical’s strong emphasis on the life issues (abortion, euthanasia, embryo-destructive stem-cell research) as social-justice issues’. Such passages, suggests Weigel, may be ‘marked in gold’. Continue reading

When it comes to talk about migration, statistics can hide the human drama that thousands of people are facing every day. The recent document: “Democratic Control for the administration of the Southern border” produced by the Jesuit Migrants Service-Spain (jointly with the Jesuit Refugee Service and Entreculturas) offers a deep reflection about the situation of thousand of migrants waiting to get in Europe and stacked in third countries, namely Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco or Senegal, so that these countries become the “external borders” of the EU. From Stockholm to Brussels
In 1995, Sweden voted in favour of joining the European Union. But the vote was won only by a narrow margin. The basically euro-sceptic stance of the past has softened considerably during the last few months. On June 12th, the Swedish people elected their members of the European Parliament in Brussels. Although only 48 percent of those eligible to vote made it to the ballot, this meant an increase from five years ago, and participation was above EU average. Continue reading
